Welshpool and Powis Walk

Welshpool and Powis Walk

3 May 2025, 10.15

Welshpool and Powis

Booking for this walk has now closed. If you would like to participate please email us on Friday 2 May, by 1 pm. Thank you.

Bereaved parents and TCF volunteers David and Fiona invite you to join them for a walk in the Welsh countryside on Saturday 3 May 2025, meeting in Welshpool from 10:15, for a 10:30 start**.

The planned route is about 5 miles, with a break after 3.8 miles (after 300 feet uphill), when we plan to stop at the National Trust’s Powis Castle café for a coffee or lunch, at approximately 12 noon.  Food and drinks are available to purchase at the cafe (however service can be a little slow, as it can be busy). You are welcome to bring a packed lunch/flask if you would prefer, and we should be able to sit together on the picnic benches outside.

The walk starts on the canal towpath, through some woodland and then across meadow footpaths, with one steep climb under trees that may be a little slippery, and have some muddy patches.  Along this route there are several stiles and a short flight of steps (down). After the break for lunch/coffee it is a gentle stroll back to the town along the former carriage drive from the Castle.

There is parking (£4) near the start of the walk, and toilets are available in a nearby supermarket.

There are two local buses - T12 (Machynlleth – Wrexham), and the X75 (Shrewsbury – Rhyader) that stop close to the start of the walk and the nearest train line is the Cambrian line trains (Shrewsbury – Pwllheli).

Total walking time is estimated to be 2½ - 3 hours, as well as the stop for lunch/coffee. We expect the total walk to be finished at approximately 3pm.

The walk will be done at a leisurely pace, should be suitable for all, however the walk would not be suitable for those with walking aids.

Unfortunately Dogs are NOT permitted on this walk.

We recommend strong footwear – trainers may be adequate, but will come home muddy and waterproofs are always advisable in Wales!

Bereaved parents, adults siblings and grandparents are warmly welcome to join this supportive walk.

***

We ask that you wait until you have been bereaved for at least 3 months before joining our supportive walks. New walk dates are regularly added here, and we hope to welcome you at a future walk.

Our peer support is for parents bereaved of a child from one month old to an adult son or daughter, from any cause. We also offer support to bereaved grandparents and adult siblings (aged 18+)

Please call our Helpline on 0345 1232304 or email helpline@tcf.org.uk for support.

We look forward to seeing those who have walked with us before, and to welcome those who are joining us for the first time.

If you haven’t walked with us yet, please don’t feel daunted or anxious about joining. You’ll quickly find yourself part of a warm, friendly and supportive community of others who have experienced similar bereavements.

** Please be aware that your email address will be given to our walk facilitators who will send a welcome email approximately one week before the walk, providing additional information and details about the meeting point. (It may sometimes end up in junk or spam folders, so please check there if you’ve registered and haven’t received the email.)

Please remember, if you bring a friend or relative for initial support, they will not be able to join the walk itself unless they are also a bereaved parent, grandparent, or adult bereaved sibling.

As this is a supportive walk, we ask that you stay together as a group for the duration of the walk.

Please note that individuals join a TCF walk at their own risk.

To register for the walk, please click ‘book for this walk’.
