Compassion Summer 2023

30 tcf.org.uk TCF NEWS | VOLUNTEER FOCUS When my daughter Lucy died suddenly at the age of 16, I felt so utterly alone although surrounded by very supportive friends and family. It wasn’t until I came across TCF that I found the benefit and comfort of talking to other bereaved parents who just “get it.” Over time I wanted to give something back and when I saw that walk leaders were required in the north of England I jumped at the chance. Since losing Lucy the Lake District has become my healing place and I find walking to be so therapeutic. My little dog Rosie and I walk for miles every day. Not only does this make me feel connected to Lucy but it also improves my overall wellbeing. I would never have thought that I would be interested in new ventures again but now I enjoy planning my walking routes, thinking up interesting names for the walks and learning some facts about the area to share on the day. I am now in my second year of leading TCF walks and have met so many lovely people as a result. Due to the rural location the walks I lead tend to be small groups and are very informal. I think many people find it easier to open up and talk freely when walking in the outdoors and I really hope those that attend benefit and take something positive from the experience. It is such a special connection we have as a community although we all wish it was a different reason which brought us together. I hope to continue offering the walks each month until the colder weather arrives so if you are local or fancy a day out in the Lakes, please keep a look out on the TCF website as you would be very welcome to join us. Join a TCF walk Throughout summer and early autumn, TCF volunteers are offering organised, volunteer- led walks in many parts of the country. Our walks have grown in popularity and now provide support to complement the many other ways of connecting and sharing with bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents via our charity. For anyone who is feeling apprehensive about reaching out for support, a walk with others who have suffered a similar loss and who understand, might well be a good first step. Literally!
