TCF News, Winter 2022

Winter 2022 - TCF Newsletter | www.tcf.org.uk 10 First sibling support day held in Sheffield Last September a unique day specially for bereaved siblings was held at Sheffield University Union. This supportive event was organised by Dr Laura Towers, a Research Fellow at the University, who had recently completed a 4 year research project on sibling bereavement over the life course. As part of her study, Laura spoke with men and women of varying ages to learn more about their experiences of sibling grief and loss. The day, organised in collaboration with The Compassionate Friends, offered some 40 bereaved siblings a space to discuss their feelings and experiences themed around some of the ideas that were mentioned most frequently in Laura’s research. For example, considering how family dynamics and relationships have changed over time, or managing questions about family and siblings during social situations. Laura shared with us some of her thoughts about this collaboration with TCF and the bereaved sibling volunteers who supported on the day: “I was moved by the power of having so many understanding people in one place. I think what TCF does is truly incredible and am so thankful that you agreed to team up with me to provide bereaved siblings with the opportunity to be part of something so supportive”. Here is just a taster of the some of the feedback from volunteers and attendees: “As tiring and emotional as it is to listen to others talk about their grief and sadness, it is wonderful to see them open up and recognise that they are not alone. Going on Saturday is honestly one of the best things I have ever done for TCF, and one of the best things I have ever done for me, and my own journey through my grief”. (C, volunteer at the day) “Having never attended a TCF event before, I was unsure what to expect. I am literally blown away by the power of people coming together to share their grief. What an amazing experience”. “Really helpful event. I am so glad to have been able to speak to people who get it in a way that others just don’t. Fantastic structure”. The next overnight retreat for bereaved siblings (18 years+) will be from 29-30 April and will be held at Woodbrooke, Birmingham. More details and booking will open in the new year.
