Winter 2022 - TCF Newsletter | www.tcf.org.uk 4 Volunteer News On two Saturday mornings in October, new volunteer Ann Darbyshire attended our online training and information sessions for new support group facilitators. Here she shares her thoughts about her learning and her role as co-facilitator of her local support group. I’ve had a lot of support from TCF since my son died in 2019 and some of that support has come from the members of my local group. However, I had not thought to train as a facilitator – after all, we have a facilitator and he’s warm and wise and capable. Also, I’m not what you’d call a natural leader - more of a Tonto than a Lone Ranger you might say. No excuse! Our group facilitator didn’t see it that way. “I think you should sign up for the training sessions,” he said. “You can be my co- facilitator.” So, in early October, I was one of five volunteers to attend the online training sessions provided by TCF for those with an interest in facilitating groups. The sessions took place on two consecutive Saturday mornings and were run by Carolyn and Ruth, themselves experienced group facilitators. Together we navigated a comprehensive programme of relevant material which ranged from a discussion about managing conflict in a group setting to advice on practical matters such as finding a suitable place to meet. There was ample opportunity to ask questions and to share our own insights. Lots to take in. Handouts aplenty. And, as always, the gentle reminder that we are all bereaved parents who are trying to do our best so please don’t be too harsh on yourselves. Last night, I attended our monthly support group meeting, my first as a co-facilitator. I cannot reveal confidential details but I can report on my personal experience. I found the increased responsibility had shifted my perspective so that I listened more attentively to others and in doing so my commitment to the group increased. My own need for the group as a primary source of support has decreased over time and I might have moved on had I not been encouraged to develop new skills. The Training and Information Day for Facilitating Groups may be a vital resource for anyone who would like to start a new group but it is also useful for those who would like to contribute more effectively within an existing support group. By Ann Darbyshire The next training and information day for new group facilitators is on Friday 10th February (all day online session). There will also be weekend dates available in May (to be confirmed).
