Countryside Walk – Castle, Canal and Ceiriog Valley
31 July 2021, 10.00 – 16.00
Meeting in Chirk Village
Countryside Walk – Castle, Canal and Ceiriog Valley
All bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents are warmly welcome to join us on Saturday 31st July for a walk around a beautiful location on the border of North East Wales and Shropshire.
The walk will be led by bereaved parents, David and Fiona, whose daughter Rebecca died in 2012.
We will be meeting in Chirk Village (just West of A5 between Wrexham and Oswestry)
Please join us from 10.00am as we shall start at 10.15am prompt
In the morning we will walk from Chirk village around the Chirk Castle estate on easy paths and gradients, with pasture, woodland and (hopefully) great views across the Shropshire/Cheshire plain.
We’ll loop back into Chirk for lunch in the park – we’ll have about an hour, so please bring a packed lunch or arrive in good in time in the morning to buy from one of the local shops.
After lunch we will walk into the lovely Ceiriog Valley, admiring the impressive parallel canal aqueduct and railway viaduct, both from above and from the valley floor below. This loop includes the canal towpath, good country paths and some short slopes.
Each leg is about 3 miles and both start and end near the village car park so you could just do one without being stranded. It is not hill-walking, but it is the countryside so you should be reasonably fit and bring suitable footwear – and let’s be honest, probably waterproofs.
Afterwards – Chirk’s Caffi Wylfa is open until 5pm if you want to stay around for a drink and chat. It offers a take-away service as well as covered outdoor seating to “eat in”.
Meet us in the middle of Chirk where there is free parking and toilets. Alternatively come by train from Chester or Shrewsbury; our timings fit in with the rail timetable.
We will send more detailed instructions and route info by email when you book.
Please also note that we will be walking at a moderate pace and the walk is not suitable if you cannot walk unaided.
Due to COVID guidelines, there are 30 places on the walk available to bereaved parents, siblings & grandparents. Please note that we are asking you to book for the walk, but if you need to cancel your place please let us know at info@tcf.org.uk so we can offer your place to another walker (if we have a waiting list). When you book please give us the name of each person coming on the walk or book for each person separately (for COVID guidelines). Many thanks.
The walks are free and are designed to offer you an opportunity to socialise and chat to other bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents, as well as to offer some exercise to support our mental and physical wellbeing. However, you can if you wish give a voluntary donation at the time you book or at www.tcf.org.uk/donate.
