Meeting in car park near Shrewsbury Abbey, Shrewsbury

We warmly invite bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents to join us on Saturday 18 September at 10am for a day walking and talking beside the river Severn in the ancient county town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire. The organisers for the day are bereaved parents Fiona and David whose daughter Rebecca died in 2012.

Following our previous day in Chirk, we have chosen two short level walks this time, to be as inclusive as possible, although there are some flights of steps at bridges (max 20 steps). We found them in a handy booklet produced by the local Ramblers group. Please note that the entire route is on the banks of the river Severn and while the paths are dry, there are still some signs of last winter’s flooding.

In the morning we start near the Abbey and walk a mile or so downstream, crossing the river to return to the Abbey via meadows and suburban streets – passing some buildings of historical note.

We plan to have lunch in the Abbey Gardens beside English Bridge (subject to weather and other people). Please bring a packed lunch.

After lunch we will walk upstream from English Bridge, again on a wide promenade, to halt at the Quarry Park (much larger and more attractive than its name might suggest!).

Each leg is about 2.5 miles, starting and finishing near the car park, so you could just walk in the morning and leave or spend the rest of the day in the town itself where there are plenty of cafes. The route includes meadows and some earth paths which could be slightly muddy so bring “sensible” footwear and a waterproof coat or umbrella.

Afterwards – we will be right beside Shrewsbury town centre if you want to stay around for a drink and chat in a cafe or pub.

Please note we will send more detailed instructions and route info by email when you book.

Please do join us from 10:00 as we shall start at 10:15 prompt. We look forward to meeting you or seeing you again.
