Welsh Marches Countryside Walk for Bereaved Parents - Oswestry

Oswestry

David and Fiona are bereaved parents who live in north Shropshire and ran two walks there in 2021. They write:

We invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult siblings to join a walk in north Shropshire near the Welsh border. As usual our aim is to bring people together in lovely countryside. Walking provides the background activity, but the focus is on mutual support and encouragement – so we try not to get out of breath!

We have planned a “most-weathers” route mainly following paved lanes and grassy paths with kissing gates and a stile. The total distance is 5 miles with 400 feet of gentle uphill gradient. It is not hill-walking, but it is the countryside so you should be reasonably fit and use suitable footwear and waterproofs. Be warned that some stretches can be somewhat muddy in springtime and the higher segments can be breezy. Please bring water, and any snacks you will need to keep you going. There are no facilities along the route, so on our return to Oswestry we can have drinks and/or lunch in a café or pub – weather permitting there are picnic benches in the park.

Afterwards – if you want to stay around for a drink and chat the cafés are generally open until 16:00. Oswestry also has plenty of pubs.

You can park in the main town centre car park (£3 up to 6 hours). Alternatively come by bus; there are half-hourly Arriva services from Wrexham (2/2A/2C) or Shrewsbury (X4/X5).
