Welsh Marches Countryside Walk – Welshpool & Powis Castle

11 June 2022, 10.15 – 15.00

Meeting in Welshpool car park (off A483 between Oswestry and Newtown)

David and Fiona invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult siblings to join a walk in the Welsh countryside from Welshpool. As usual our aim is to bring people together in lovely countryside. Walking provides the background activity, but the focus is on mutual support and encouragement. Please note that this route is not suitable for those who require walking aids or who might find the pace too demanding.

The route follows the Montgomery Canal towpath on the way out, then ascends the valley side across pasture land with a view across the Severn valley, reaching the spectacular Powys Castle (NT) where we can stop for refreshments. The total distance is 5.7 miles with 400 feet of uphill gradients. The usual comments apply:

  • We use some grassy paths with kissing gates and occasional stiles.
  • It is not hill-walking, but it is the Welsh countryside so you should bring suitable footwear and waterproofs.
  • Some parts can be a bit muddy and the higher segments can be breezy.
  • Please bring water, and any snacks you will need to keep you going, and we suggest a picnic lunch at the castle (the NT café is also available for take-out).

Afterwards – from the castle it is a short walk down into Welshpool and if you want to stay around for a drink and chat there are some cafés and a selection of pubs.

You can park in the main town centre car park (£1 per hour). Alternatively come by bus from Wrexham & Machynlleth (T12) or Shrewsbury & Aberystwyth (X75).

We will send detailed instructions by email when you book.

Please join us from 10:15 as we shall start walking at 10:30 prompt, reaching Powys Castle for lunch by 13:00, and then back to Welshpool by 14:30.

Please note that if you need to cancel after you have booked – we will rely on you to let us know beforehand so that our walk leaders/facilitators don't expect or wait for you. Please email info@tcf.org.uk to let us know. Thank you.
