RSPB St Aidan's Nature Park, Leeds

Bereaved sibling, Caroline, invites you to join on a walk in West Yorkshire. Here she explains a little more about her plans for the day and her hope that you will join her on Saturday 11 June.

"Hi, I’m Caroline and I’m really looking forward to sharing one of my favourite places on this walk around St Aidan’s RSPB nature reserve, near Leeds.

St Aidan’s was formerly an opencast coal mining area that was flooded in 1988, after the riverbank collapsed. It is now a paradise for anyone who enjoys getting out in nature, birdwatching or even wild swimming. The Dragline, which remains on site, is a wonder of engineering and worth a visit in its own right.

There are a number of routes around St Aidan’s and, although the terrain is rugged, much of it is suitable for people who use a wheelchair. The walk will be approximately 5 miles at a steady pace. You can choose to bring a packed lunch or to visit nearby RiversMeet cafe to sample their delight.

We will meet at 1045, with the walk starting at 1100. Approximate finish time will be 1500.

There is a pay and display car park (free for RSPB members) on site. St Aidan’s is also accessible by public transport (167 from Leeds City Centre, or 168, also from Leeds, which involves a short walk from Great Preston on alighting).

This is the first Compassionate Friends walk in the Leeds area and offers the opportunity to socialise with others who have experienced the loss of a child, grandchild or sibling".

Please note that well-behaved dogs are welcome on this walk, but St Aidan's ask that dogs keep to the footpaths and are under close control or a lead.

Please note that if you need to cancel after you have booked – we will rely on you to let us know beforehand so that our walk leaders/facilitators don't expect or wait for you. Please email info@tcf.org.uk to let us know. Thank you.
