30 July 2022, 11.00 – 14.00

Ellesmere Wharf, Ellesmere

BOOKING FOR THIS WALK HAS NOW CLOSED. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE WALK PLEASE CONTACT THE HELPLINE helpline@tcf.org.uk

Bereaved parents, David and Fiona have chosen this walk to include those who might find our typical countryside walks a little too demanding, and so not to exclude anybody from walking and sharing together.

We invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult siblings to join a short easy walk around the historic small town of Ellesmere and its interesting waterways. As usual our aim is to bring people together in relaxing surroundings, with the focus on mutual support and encouragement. The route is particularly gentle, on level paved surfaces with a short stretch of rural footpath through woodland leading to our proposed picnic spot. We will not be in open country and there are no stiles but users of walking aids will not be able to negotiate that portion of the route.

The route follows the Shropshire Union Canal towpath on the way out, then cuts across a short (quarter-mile) stretch of grassy paths and woodland, reaching our picnic spot overlooking the Mere. Here we will stop for lunch, then drop down to the promenade.

After walking in the gardens beside the Mere (or indeed sitting on the promenade), we’ll return to the town. Depending on how far we walk in the gardens the total distance is between 2.5 and 3.4 miles with about 170 feet of ascent.

Afterwards – as the walk itself is short, there should be plenty of time for a drink and chat (and cake) in a café in the town.

You will need:

  • Suitable footwear
  • Waterproofs
  • A picnic lunch

Ellesmere is not well served by public transport and we expect most will need to come by car. We will send detailed instructions (including details for free parking) by email when you book.

Please join us from 10:45 as we shall start walking at 11.00 prompt, reaching our picnic spot for lunch by approx. 12:00 and returning to the town centre by 14:00.

We look forward to you joining us.
