Welsh Marches Walk - Return to Chirk
17 September 2022, 10.15 – 15.00
Meeting just off the A5 between Wrexham and Oswestry
Bereaved parents David and Fiona’s next 2022 walk once again straddles the England-Wales border in the lovely area round Chirk. The total distance is 4.4 miles with 340 feet of ascent.
We invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult siblings to join us in a walk together. Walking and enjoying the countryside provides the background activity, but the focus is on mutual support and encouragement. Please note that this route is not suitable for those who require walking aids or who might find the distance or pace too demanding.
The route starts at a garden centre just off the A5 south of Chirk (free parking) and explores meadows around Chirk Bank before descending to the floor of the Ceiriog valley. After passing under the splendid canal aqueduct and railway viaduct we climb up into Chirk village for lunch (3 miles, with 340 feet of ascent).
To return to the cars later we follow the canal towpath back across the aqueduct (a mile and a half on the level).
Afterwards there are several venues nearby for those who would like to stay on to enjoy them or to continue our time together.
Please note:
- We use some grassy paths with three stiles and many kissing gates, and one railway crossing.
- Much of the route is beside water (the canal and the river Ceiriog), and we cross the aqueduct on the towpath.
- It is not hill-walking, but it is the British countryside so you should bring suitable footwear and waterproofs.
- Some parts can be a bit muddy.
- Please bring water, and any snacks you will need to keep you going, and we suggest lunch at a café in Chirk.
We will send more detailed instructions and route info by email when you book.
We plan to meet at 10:15, to start walking at 10:30 prompt.
If you haven’t walked with us before, please don’t feel daunted or apprehensive about joining on your own. You will very quickly find yourself in a friendly, supportive community of other bereaved parents and siblings.
