Keswick, Lake District
Bereaved parent and volunteer walk facilitator, Sheila, is planning her next walk around Blencathra in The Lake District for Saturday 15th April 2023. Meet at 9.45 am for a 10.00 am start.
Sheila writes:
My faithful Spaniel cross, Rosie, and I are looking forward to leading our first walk of spring and we invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult bereaved siblings to join us. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome. It will be an opportunity to chat to others while benefitting from some exercise and fresh air in beautiful surroundings. If you haven’t yet walked with us, please don’t feel daunted or apprehensive about joining. You will very quickly find yourself in a friendly, supportive community of others who are similarly bereaved and understand.
The mighty Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is one of the higher peaks in the Lake District and has six separate fell tops. This walk will follow a path round the side of one of these, Blease Fell, and along the valley to a stunning viewpoint where we will stop for a “brew with a view” before retracing our steps back to the car park. It’s approximately 4 miles in total and at a steady pace with a short break it should take around 2.5 hours. The walk has a gradual climb to start followed by mostly good and flat footpaths throughout. There is a rocky section at the head of the valley and a couple of streams to cross and I have been advised to remind you that you take part in the walk at your own risk. Please remember this is a rural walk so you should have a reasonable level of fitness, wear suitable footwear and bring waterproofs.
After the walk there is a lovely café in the village of Threlkeld which is a short drive away if you would like to join us for a well-earned refreshment and toilet break.
Please note that if you bring along a friend or relative with you for initial support, they will be unable to join us for the walk itself unless they are also a bereaved parent, grandparent or adult bereaved sibling.
There is a free limited space car park situated close to the meeting point.
