13 April 2024, 09.45 – 13.30

Keswick

Compassionate Friends (TCF) volunteer and walks facilitator, Sheila, is leading her next walk in Cumbria on Saturday 13 April. Here she writes this warm invitation to you:

Hi! I am Sheila and will be leading this supportive walk through the stunning Cumbrian countryside with my faithful spaniel cross, Rosie. We invite bereaved parents, grandparents and adult siblings to join us, and well-behaved dogs are also welcome. It will be an opportunity to chat to others while benefitting from some exercise and fresh air in beautiful surroundings.

We will start from the pretty market town of Keswick and walk along the old railway line, now an interesting footpath, to the village of Threlkeld where we will stop for refreshments at the little café before returning to Keswick via the hamlet of Wescoe along a winding country road with beautiful mountain views; then through woodland where we might be lucky enough to spot some red squirrels and roe deer.

The walk is approximately 6.5 miles in total and is mostly flat on good paths and quiet roads apart from a couple of short, steep upward and downward sections on a tarmac road on the return to Keswick. At a steady pace, with a break at the café mid-way, it should take around 3 hours. Please note this is a rural walk so you should have a reasonable level of fitness, wear sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs. There will be refreshments and public toilets available at the café in Threlkeld.

We will meet at Keswick from 9:45 and will start walking at 10:00. There is parking opposite our meeting place*.

We hope you will join us and look forward to meeting you or seeing you again.

Please note that our peer support is for parents bereaved of a child from one month old to an adult son or daughter, from any cause.

We are sorry but if your loss is within the last 3-4 months, we think it would be best to wait a little longer before accessing our support walks – new walk dates are added on a regular basis here. We hope to welcome you at a future walk.

We look forward to meeting those who have walked with us before, and also welcoming those who are new to our walks.

If you haven’t yet walked with us, please don’t feel daunted or apprehensive about joining. You will very quickly find yourself in a friendly, supportive community of others who are similarly bereaved.

* We will be sending out a welcome email about a week before the walk to give you more information and meeting point details. This email comes from info@tcf.org.uk so please look out for it (please also be aware that it can sometimes go into junk or spam folders, so do check there if you have registered for the walk and haven't received details)

Please note that if you bring along a friend or relative with you for initial support, they will be unable to join us for the walk itself unless they are also a bereaved parent, grandparent or adult bereaved sibling.

As this is a supportive walk, we ask that we stay together as a group for the duration the walk. Thankyou.
