Six Things We Need

Carolyn · SixThingsWeNeed - Audio Talk by Sangeeta Mahajan

Carolyn · SixThingsWeNeed - Audio Talk by Sangeeta Mahajan

A talk given by Sangeeta Mahajan at The Compassionate Friends weekend retreat for parents bereaved by suicide or substance use/alcohol: July 2023.

Please note that all bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents will hopefully find many aspects of Sangeeta's words helpful whatever the cause of the loss of your loved one.

Sangeeta's talk hopes to deepen our understanding of the basic needs of those in grief. It helps us identify where we might be stuck, what might be missing for us and how we might find what's right for us. It also gives us insights into what might be helping us and how we can build on our strengths on this road of healing.

Sangeeta lost her son, Saagar to a short but serious mental illness eight years ago. He was a bright young man of twenty, with everything to live for - his love of French and cricket, his exceptional talent as a drummer and his special brand of humour and kindness.

About the speaker

Sangeeta Mahajan is a Consultant Anaesthetist, a mental health activist and educator, a qualified trainer in Youth Mental Health First aid and has trained doctors, teachers and others to identify young people in difficulty at an early stage. Through writing and speaking, she endeavours to engage with people from all communities to prevent young suicide by raising awareness and reducing stigma.

Sangeeta has spoken at previous retreats run by The Compassionate Friends. Her words are always wise, moving, inspirational, and hugely hopeful for anyone who has suffered deep loss. Her talk - Finding Meaning After Loss - was the first online event hosted by The Compassionate Friends and can still be viewed and listened to on the TCF website. She hosts an on-line peer support group CORe, the Circle of Remembrance, along with her husband Simon, holding space for bereaved parents to express their pain and love.
